Frans Martin Claerhout (1919-2006) born in 1919 in Pittem, Belgium, came to South Africa as a Catholic missionary in 1946 and stayed there until his death in 2006. His career started from an artistic family that included Jef Claerhout and May Claerhout as an artist after a visit to Belgium in 1957, where he immersed himself in the museums and met Constant Permeke, among others. Work in multiple museums and commends considerable prices on various auctions
