BSA 1955 DB 34 GS “Gold Star” 499cc OHV frame # CB32.2881 engine # DB34.GS.302
Top model for 1939 in the BSA range was the M24 Gold Star, the ultimate sportsman’s dream. It had bore x stroke dimensions of 82×94 mm, a foot-controlled 4-speed gearbox and a specially tuned engine, individually built and bench tested. It was fitted with an aluminium cylinder and head and Amal TT carburetter.
The Gold Star name was derived from the award won on 30th June 1937 by the great Wall Handley who achieved a 100mph lap of the Brooklands circuit on a specially prepared 500cc Empire Star model. The super sports Gold Star model would become one of the most successful production racing motorcycles ever and the post-war Gold Star formed the mainstay of clubman’s racing in the 1950s.
The Gold Star returned as a 350cc model with bore x stroke of 71x88mm in BSA’s post-WW2 range at the end of 1948. For 1950 a 500cc version – the B34 – with 85x88mm bore x stroke was added and this larger Goldie was the first to switch to the new die-cast top-end, with separate rocker box, in 1951. The change to the ‘CB’ designation in 1954 marked the introduction of the classic ‘big fin’ engine top end but the designation lasted only until the arrival of the ‘DB’ series in 1955. The ‘DB’ incorporated a much improved lubrication system.
According to the accompanying BSA Owners’ Club dating certificate the machine was despatched on July, 25 1955 to Gilbert Harding Ltd. in the Isle of Man. It was then redirected to Dutch BSA importer Hart, Nibbrig & Greeve. The Goldie was to Trials specification. Both frame and engine numbers correspond with the information in the BSA despatch book. The former owner bought the machine some 10 years ago and conducted a full restoration. A file of invoices related to new parts and services is available. The DB34GS is a fairly rare bird, it was only produced between 1955 and 1957.
After restoration the machine has been dry stored but she hasn’t run; petrol and oil tanks have never been filled. Front and rear lights are fitted but not connected. Features include a new ABSAF oil pump that has a 20% higher output, aluminium wheel rims, Lucas competition magneto and 190KM Smiths speedo.
