Indian 1931 Scout “101” 600 cc side valve V-twin frame # S1628 engine # EG1209
In September-October 1929 an Indian dealer from Bangor, Pennsylvania, organises an impressive event: a 1929 101 Scout sidecar outfit is ridden 20 days non-stop around a half-mile fairground track. There’s a team of riders and helpers; each rider is in the saddle for an hour and gets a five-hour rest. A fuel man next to the track monitors the mileage and signals when refueling is required. The combination is then slowed down to 10 mph, the refuelling man runs alongside and steps into the sidecar with the gas can. The crew makes over 200 refuelings, over 100 oil fillings, and over 500 rider changes at the 10 miles-per-hour pace. At one point in the marathon continuous pounding rain forces the team into half-hour shifts for three days. The Scout laps the track over 25,000 times and accumulates 12,695 miles (20.430 km) before water finally makes its way into the magneto and the ignition fails. After wiping down the inside of the magneto, the engine is started within a few minutes, but the endurance run is over. Third gear is used throughout the run, except for the period of the heavy rainstorm when the combination runs in second gear for 48 continuous hours (Source: Indian Scout, by Jerry Hatfield).
The 101 Scout is only produced for four years and the 1928 through 1930 101 models are much alike, but the 1931 model differs in a number of details from earlier models: it gets a new oil pump that can be controlled via the throttle cable so that the oil supply is increased when the throttle is opened to a certain degree. The front view is dominated by a new centrally mounted headlamp to allow better aiming of the light and a new electrical horn with special Indian design face. For the first time an Auto-Lite generator is fitted. The handlebars are strengthened with a crossbar and the rear wheel becomes quickly detachable and gets an internal expanding brake. Various colour combinations are available for 1931. The last-year 101 is a sought-after model, and the machine we present is an older restoration in good technical condition. Carburettor and magneto have been reconditioned and the electrics are functioning well. She’s a good runner and has originally been sold in Sweden by importer Wiklunds. She comes with Indian Corbin 130 km speedo, jiffy stand, rear view mirror, leather pannier bag and pillion footrests. Video:https://youtu.be/PwQxzXWR25g
