In 1932 Moto Guzzi decides to move into the lightweight market. At first this is the 175cc class that enjoys various advantages in taxation and driving licence regulation, but when these are abolished the public interest in the 175cc class wanes and Guzzi decides to increase the displacement of its little P175. At first the capacity is stepped up to a 232cc machine but in 1937 the 247 cc PL is introduced with a frame consisting of tubular and pressed steel elements. Later versions of this model are among others the Egretta (egret) and the Ardetta (small heron). These models have a three speed gearbox and in 1939 a modernised version is marketed, the 4-speed Airone (heron) that is to become very popular and will be produced up to 1957. The Airone is available in Turismo and Sport versions. The Sport has aluminium Borrani rims instead of chromed steel ones, 25 mm instead of 22 mm carburettor, sports handlebars, higher compression ratio and different camshaft. This results in a 12 hp power output @ 5,200 rpm, 2.5 hp more than that of the Turismo.
In 1947 the Airone is fitted with “upside down” hydraulic forks designed by Carlo Guzzi and with hydraulic rear dampers. At the end of 1948 the model gets a new aluminium cylinder head assembly with enclosed valve gear. The reliable Airone is a very successful model for the Guzzi factory, in all -including the military version- more than 28,000 are produced.

The machine on offer is fitted with a chromed steel front wheel rim and a bum pad; the paintwork has been touched up here and there. She comes with an additional buddy seat and battery holder.
